Still Using Windows 10 in 2026? Here’s What Seattle PC Users Need to Know

If your computer still runs Windows 10, it can continue to work — but Microsoft ended normal Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. That makes security, compatibility, and upgrade planning more important in 2026.
Your PC does not automatically need to be replaced
A Windows 10 PC can still boot, browse the web, run software, and store files. The bigger issue is the operating system’s long-term security and software support. That matters most on machines used for banking, email, work accounts, passwords, or sensitive personal data.
Four practical options
1. Upgrade to Windows 11
If the hardware is supported, Windows 11 is usually the cleanest path. Before upgrading, check CPU support, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, free storage, RAM, drivers, and backup status.
2. Use Windows 10 Extended Security Updates
Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates for eligible Windows 10 systems that need more time. ESU is a security bridge, not a return to full Windows 10 feature support.
3. Upgrade the hardware
Sometimes the operating system is not the main problem. Replacing a mechanical hard drive with an SSD, adding RAM, cleaning cooling systems, and reducing startup load can transform an older PC.
4. Consider Linux
For systems that cannot officially run Windows 11, Linux can be a strong option for web browsing, email, documents, streaming, coding, file management, and many Steam games.
Important ESU detail
Microsoft released Windows 10 ESU preparation components in September 2026, but installing preparation packages alone does not mean a PC is enrolled in Extended Security Updates. Enrollment still has to be completed.
