Seattle Small Business PC Security Checklist
DJ The PC Dude • Seattle, Washington
A small business does not need an enterprise-size security budget to eliminate many common risks. Shops, freelancers, home offices and small teams can improve security significantly by getting a handful of basics right and keeping them consistent.
1. Keep Windows, macOS and Linux updated
Security updates matter more than feature upgrades. Machines that cannot receive current security fixes should be isolated, upgraded or replaced when practical.
2. Use MFA on email and business accounts
Email is often the reset point for every other account. Protect it with multi-factor authentication or passkeys and keep recovery information current.
3. Stop using administrator accounts for everyday work
A separate standard user account limits what malware or a bad installer can change without additional approval.
4. Maintain a real backup
A backup should exist outside the computer being protected. Test that important files can actually be restored. A backup that has never been tested is only a theory.
5. Lock down Wi-Fi and the router
Change default router credentials, use current encryption, disable features you do not need and keep the router firmware supported when possible.
6. Verify software before installing it
Fake installers and look-alike download pages are common. Prefer the developer's official site, package manager or trusted app store, and avoid random download portals.
7. Review browser extensions
Extensions can see a surprising amount of browser activity. Remove extensions nobody remembers installing and limit permissions when the browser allows it.
8. Use password managers instead of recycled passwords
Unique passwords reduce the damage from one breached service. A password manager makes that practical without forcing staff to memorize dozens of credentials.
9. Know what is exposed to the internet
Remote Desktop, database servers, NAS devices and admin panels should not be publicly exposed unless there is a clear reason and a secure configuration.
10. Have a recovery plan before something breaks
Know who has admin access, where backups live, how to reset important accounts and how to contact customers if email or the website goes down.
DJ The PC Dude Take
Small-business security is mostly consistency. A patched PC, good backup, MFA and careful software installation can prevent a large percentage of everyday disasters without buying a complicated security platform.
