Linux Gaming in 2026: Proton Is Better, but Compatibility Still Changes

Linux gaming has improved enormously, but “works on Proton” is not a permanent status. A publisher update, anti-cheat change, launcher update, driver regression or new Proton version can turn a working game into a broken one overnight.

Proton 11 is the current stable generation

Valve's current release list shows Proton 11.0-2 as the latest stable release, while Proton Experimental continues to receive newer game-specific fixes. Experimental currently includes all changes from Proton 11.0-2 plus additional compatibility work.

That does not mean Experimental is automatically the correct choice. Valve's own issue tracker contains regressions where a game works on an older Proton release but fails on a newer one.

Use Proton versions like rollback points

Game stops working
    ↓
check current Proton
    ↓
try Proton stable
    ↓
try Proton Experimental
    ↓
try the last known-good older version
    ↓
check anti-cheat / launcher / driver changes
    ↓
only then modify prefixes or DLLs

This approach prevents a common mistake: changing five things at once and then having no idea which change actually fixed the game.

Anti-cheat is still the unpredictable layer

Community compatibility trackers continue to show mixed results. Some anti-cheat games work normally, some require a particular Proton version, some work only in single-player, and others remain completely broken.

That is important because anti-cheat support is often a publisher decision rather than a Proton limitation. A technically compatible game can still be blocked if its anti-cheat configuration does not permit Linux.

A useful troubleshooting record

For each game, keep a tiny compatibility note:

• Game and Steam App ID
• Linux distribution and kernel
• GPU and driver version
• Proton version
• Anti-cheat status
• Mods and mod loader
• Launch options
• Last date verified

That last field matters. Linux compatibility information gets stale quickly.
